Obamafy - the missing FAQ

January 15th, 2009 · 21 Comments

  • Is there going to be a version for PC?
No. Programming for PC is not as much fun as a programming for a mac.
  • Can I use your source and make a version for a PC?
Be my guest and don’t forget to credit me for my part.
  • What technology did you use to make this plugin?
Quartz Composer. It is a program that ships with OSX developer tools
  • Since you are using Quartz Composer, can I apply Obamafy to Pixelmator?
you’ll probably have to change some things since the plugin is using a virtual patch borrowed from Photo Booth called UserBackdrops.
  • How many versions of Obamafy are there?
Three that are one. I made two revisions since the release and every time I overwrote the previous file to eliminate confusion. In version two introduced the blue lines and version three has better colors and the brightness is adjustable
  • My library folder does not have a compositions folder, should I just create one?
If the compositions does not exist, it is very likely because you are not running OSX 10.5 Leopard. Look at “About This Mac”
  • If I send you a photo will you put it on the site?
Only if it has a pet in it
  • What are the songs in the videos
the first one is “Oniki Dev Adam” (12 mighty men) a song for the Turkish national basketball team by a band called Athena. The other one is “Beer for breakfast” by The Replacements
  • why is one of the videos down?
youtube took the sound off of it. :-( other videos with the same song are still up for some reason.
  • UPDATE Is Obamafy compatible with Snow Leopard?
    Not now.

I downloaded and followed the instructions and it didn’t work… how is it supposed to work??

  • 6 Lauren // Feb 3, 2009 at 16:44

Same here… I downloaded as described and it’s not working. I also drug it into Photobooth as a “background” but that doesn’t affect the foreground.. just makes the background red & blue.

    Hi there peoples,

I had the same problem - I put obamafy.qtz in Macintosh HD > Library > Compositions, opened Photo Booth and… nothing happened.

But then I was overcome with curiosity and did a quick search for the ‘compositions’ folder, and what do you know? 2 folders appeared, and neither of them were the compositions folder I had put the file in.

Try placing obamafy.qtz in the the following location: Macintosh HD > Developer > Examples > Quartz Composer > Applications > QCTV > Compositions and closing and reopening Photo Booth, it worked for me. Keep scrolling through the Effects, it took me four clicks to get there.

it just gave me a video that doesnt even work

    need help please

  • 9 Dubi // Apr 14, 2009 at 22:50

hannah, did you copy the file to right place and start photobooth or just double clicked on it?
the file you downloaded obamafy.qtz may have the same icon as a quicktime movie but it does not play a video.

I have the file “Obamafy.qtz” (Dec 07, 2008) downloaded in the right place, and it works as expected as an effect in Photo Booth (Mac OS X 10.5.7). Hurray! Thanks.

But, I’d like to use this effect in Quartz Composer on an existing photo. Unfortunately, I’ve never used Quartz Composer before. Please help.

Here’s what I’ve tried so far: I double-click Obamafy, qtz, and Quartz Composer launches; it shows the schematic of the Obamafy composition, and its viewer. The viewer shows a human head/shoulders, face forward (?), in silhouette with a colored background, blue on the left and red on the right.

The viewer has an “Input Parameters” gear icon. When I click it, it exposes a semi-transparent sheet that has two image wells: _protocolInout_Image and _inputOrigi…oundImage. It also has two check boxes: _protocoll..eviewMode and dragAndDropHilite.

I can drag existing photos into these twp image wells.
Nothing much seems to happen until I drag the same photo into both wells. Then the WRONG thing happens:
    (1) the resulting image is too dark to use.
    (2) I only get the bottom portion of the original photo, with the effect rendered.
    I started with a color jpg, 254 x 400 pixels.

I read somewhere that I could control the intensity of the effect with the mouse, by dragging left-right. That seems not to work in Quartz Composer.

    Please advise:
    (a) Should Quartz Composer/Obamafy.qtz be able to render the famous effect on an existing photo (say, *.jpg, *.gif, or *.tif)?
    (b) What’s the order of operations I should apply? What do a drag where? What check boxes should I enable?
    (c) How do I get the effect applied to the full photo, not just the bottom part.
    (d) How can I lighten the effect? I’m hoping for rather pale coloration on the original image, so it remains more readily recognizable.

  • 11 Dubi // Jul 15, 2009 at 12:35

    a) yes.

In order to apply the effect to images you will need to modify the file.
    1) you will need to replace UserBackdrops with two composite patches.
    2) you will have to change the values of ImageCrop inside the two macros.
    3) play with the values of the color control patch.

QTZ is a lot of fun. I recommend you do the tutorials

i don’t know how to expand the file can someone help also, i put it in the compositions folder and i clicked on photobooth but only the background comes out as the obama thing but when i get in the picture i look my normal self why is this?

  • 15 tds // Sep 13, 2009 at 12:24

Yep, same here. Running Snow Leopard and when clicking on the last page of effects Photo Booth stops responding.

  • 16 sandler77 // Sep 16, 2009 at 21:17

Crashing Photo Booth! After adding the file, putting it into the desired folder, Photo Booth crashes when you search through your effects pages… Every time! Please help…

  • 17 Dubi // Sep 16, 2009 at 22:04

sandler77 . It could be that the plugin might not be compatible with Snow Leopard.

  • 18 sandler77 // Sep 26, 2009 at 21:45

Any word about an update to the plugin that is compatible with Snow Leopard?

  • 19 Cantos // Oct 26, 2009 at 23:51

    Hi,

I placed it in Mac > Library > Compositions = did not work

Then I placed it in Mac > System > Library > Compositions = did not work

I have Snow Leopard and it crashes when I scroll through to the end of the “effects.” My conclusion is that this effect is NOT compatible with Snow Leopard. Don’t waste your time.

Obamafy doesn’t work with Snow Leopard. Tried using it in 32 bit mode but does not work either.

  • 21 Dubi // Apr 19, 2010 at 22:10
